The first ever edition of "Eurovision Choir Of The Year" takes place tonight. Choirs from nine countries compete in the show live from Riga, Latvia. Check out the lineup, format and where to watch

We have a new contest in the Eurovision family: Eurovision Choir Of The Year. Tonight the first edition of Eurovision Choir Of The Year takes place with nine countries participating, including a new member in the Eurovision family: Wales.

The show kicks off at 20:00 CET live from Arena Riga in Latvia.

Each of the nine choirs will have six minutes to perform a choral piece - without music. The piece can include one or more songs.

The winning choir will be decided by a professional jury, and wins a prize of 10,000 Euro.

Format

Each of the nine countries will be represented by a choir, and each choir will have six minutes to perform an unaccompanied choral piece . The choral piece should reflect national or regional character in some way, and may include singular or several musical works or of a free genre.

The performances will be judged by a professional jury, who decides the outcome:

  • Elīna Garanča (Mezzo-soprano, Latvia)
  • John Rutter (Composer, United Kingdom)
  • Nicolas Fink (Conductor, Switzerland)

Countries who are members of EBU are eligible to participate in Eurovision Choir of the Year.

The contest will be produced by Latvian broadcaster Latvijas Televīzija (LTV) and the Riga Tourism Development Bureau. The hosts of tonight's show is Eric Whitacre and Eva Johansone.
