The horses of autumn
From the depths of the forest, the horses of autumn
Brought back wild winds and chilly mornings
In the evening, they drank their fill from lazy ponds
Beside them, a man in a reddish-brown coat
The lumberjacks said that he'd stroke the trees
Making the oaks tremble like friendly dogs
Other recalled a face of marble
But one where two eyes burnt through the strands of the night
I, who was nearing fifteen years old
And forgetting about school in order to learn the ways of the wind
I, who stole from novels
The craziest sentences, waiting with a pounding heart
For the month when the forest turns a bit like a gypsy
With gold coins clinking all around
And untied hair, in worldly gowns
Ripped apart by packs of wolves
On those evenings when I slipped into the realm of mystery
Along rusty roads where the night stretched out
And patiently I kept watch for hours on end
For the strange horseman with his bay horses
Me, I'll ask him
To take me with him beyond the forests
Me, I'll explain to him
That by opening a door, it's the world I'd like to find
I didn't have time to roam the world
Yet I've crossed the forest three times, that's good enough
But when the woods give way and the rain wanders by
I listen several times to see if I heаr the horseѕ
