Belarus disqualified from Eurovision Song Contest 2021
Two songs rejected: Belarus will not be participating in Eurovision Song Contest 2021
Galasy ZMesta was internally picked by Belarusian state broadcaster BTRC to represent the Belarus in Eurovision 2021 with the song "Ya Nauchu Tebya".
After the song was submitted, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) scrutinized the song to ensure it complied with the rules of the competition. EBU concluded two weeks ago, that the song "puts the non-political nature" of Eurovision in question, and requested the broadcaster to submit a modified version or a new song, or else being disqualified from Eurovision Song Contest 2021.
BTRC submitted a new song by the group Galasy ZMesta, and the EBU and the Reference Group (the Contest’s governing board) inspected the new song, and also found that this song was in breach of the rules of Eurovision and therefore disqualified Belarus from Eurovision 2021.
Belarus should have competed in the 1st half of Semi-final 1.
Statement from EBU
On Wednesday 10 March we wrote to the broadcaster BTRC, which is responsible for Belarus’ entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, to request that they take all steps necessary to amend their entry to this year’s event to ensure it is compliant with the rules of the competition.
Following this BTRC submitted a new song, by the same artists, within an agreed timeframe.
The EBU and the Reference Group, the Contest’s governing board, carefully scrutinized the new entry to assess its eligibility to compete.
It was concluded that the new submission was also in breach of the rules of the competition that ensure the Contest is not instrumentalized or brought into disrepute.
As BTRC have failed to submit an eligible entry within the extended deadline, regrettably, Belarus will not be participating in the 65th Eurovision Song Contest in May
Belarus in Eurovision Song Contest
Belarus haven't had the greatest success in Eurovision history. They have participated every year since 2004, but only qualified for the Grand Final six times.
Their best result is a 6th place with the 2007-entry Work Your Magic performed by Dmitry Koldun. This is their only Top-15 position in Eurovision.
