Czech Republic: No televised national selection for Eurovision 2020
Czech Republic's public broadcaster has just announced that there will no longer be a televised national selection to select their entry for Eurovision 2020 to be held in Rotterdam. Czech's entry will be once again determined through an online competition
Ambition is key but it simply didn't work for ČT - Czech Republic's broadcaster - who has announced they're scraping their initial idea of hosting a televised show to determine the country's Eurovision 2020 entry.
Instead, the broadcaster is keeping the selection used for the two previous years: an online selection. The news were confirmed through a Facebook post - without a specification on why the plans were changed - where ČT states that they're doing their best "to make the upcoming online selection more interesting".
Along with the news, new dates were confirmed for Czech's selection process:
- 6 January 2020: Artists announcement
- 13 January 2020: Songs released - Online voting opens
- 26 January 2020: Online voting ends
Czech Republic in Eurovision Song Contest
Czech Republic has participated in Eurovision Song Contest 8 times. After three years of very bad results (2007, 2008, 2009), they decided to withdraw from the competition for five years, with only 10 points on their Eurovision-account. But their hope for Eurovision never died, so they returned to the contest again in 2015 and the following years.
In 2016 they qualified for the Grand Final for the first time. Best result was in 2018 when Mikolas Josef secured a 6th place with the song Lie To Me.
