Moldova withdraws from Eurovision 2025
The decision was made "following a detailed analysis of the current situation, as well as the economic, administrative and artistic challenges"
Moldovan broadcaster TRM has just announced that Moldova has withdrawn from the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.
The announcement was made today at a press conference by Moldova 1’s Director, Corneliu Durnescu, and Moldova’s Head of Delegation, Daniela Crudu.
The decision was made "following a detailed analysis of the current situation, as well as the economic, administrative, and artistic challenges."
Etapa Națională, the countries selection contest for Eurovision 2025, is also canceled.
Decrease in public interest
Director of Moldova 1, Corneliu Durnescu says:
– The decision was not an easy one, but necessary in the current context. This year's national selection highlighted certain challenges, including a decrease in public interest and the overall quality of the plays and artistic performances. This fact generated a negative perception among specialists and the public, underlining the need for a substantial reform in the selection process.
TRM aims to review the selection criteria and methodology, to encourage wider participation of talented artists, and to provide a more consistent and competitive cultural representation on the international stage.
– We consulted music specialists, and most of them expressed serious reservations about Moldova's participation this year, in exact agreement with the opinion of the jury that TRM selected for this edition. We respect the opinions of professionals and the general public, and we understand that we must make responsible decisions, Corneliu Durnescu noted.
According to the director of Moldova 1, the Eurovision Song Contest involves considerable costs, including for the organization of the national Final, the production of the show, the promotion of the artist, the team's travel and accommodation, stage production, technical equipment, and other associated expenses. The participation fee to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for the Moldovan broadcaster is 21,486 euros.
Return to Eurovision
Head of the Eurovision Moldova Delegation, Daniela Crudu, says:
– This decision was not an easy one, but we assure you that it was analyzed in detail. We know that we would all have liked to organize a national final and designate the song that would represent us at the international stage. However, we are firmly convinced that this decision will boost the interest in participating in future editions. We will ensure that we return to Eurovision with force.
– It is important to support people who want to reach big stages and to give them the opportunity to prepare better.
