Sweden: Melodifestivalen 2025 dates and cities revealed

Six shows, Six Saturdays, Six cities: Luleå, Göteborg, Västerås, Malmö, Jönköping, and Stockholm. 30 acts will compete in Melodifestivalen 2025 between 1 February and 8 March

There was no big news when it comes to Sweden's upcoming Melodifestivalen. As in previous years, SVT has announced that the country's national selection contest will take place in six different cities around Sweden.

The largest entertainment program in the country will start in Luleå and end in Stockholm.

Melodifestivalen 2025 – Host cities

  • 1 February: Heat 1, Luleå (Coop Norrbotten Arena)
  • 8 February: Heat 2, Göteborg (Scandinavium)
  • 15 February: Heat 3, Västerås (ABB Arena Syd)
  • 22 February: Heat 4, Malmö (Malmö Arena)
  • 1 March: Heat 5 + Final qual, Jönköping (Husqvarna Garden)
  • 8 March: Final, Stockholm (Strawberry Arena)

The format for Melodifestivalen 2025 will be changed a bit compared to last year:

There will be five heats with six entries in each, so the entire competition will therefore consist of 30 entries. Two entries from each heat go straight to the Final, one remain in the competition, and three are eliminated.

Final qual

Right after Heat 5, the five third-place finishers from the heats will compete in a "Final qual" ("Finalkvalet"). The song of the five that received the most votes in the heats will go straight to the Final. The public will decide the last finalist among the remaining four songs.

Melodifestivalen 2025 – Format

  • Heat 1: 6 songs (2 to Final, 1 to Final qual)
  • Heat 2: 6 songs (2 to Final, 1 to Final qual)
  • Heat 3: 6 songs (2 to Final, 1 to Final qual)
  • Heat 4: 6 songs (2 to Final, 1 to Final qual)
  • Heat 5: 6 songs (2 to Final, 1 to Final qual)
    • Final qual: 5 songs (recap) (2 to Final)
  • Final: 12 songs

The submission window for Melodifestivalen 2025 was open from 23 August to 13 September. A total of 2,794 entries were submitted, but only 30 of them will compete. The 30 artists and song titles will be revealed in November/December 2024.

Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest

Since 1958, Sweden has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 63 times, and with great success. Together with Ireland, they hold the record of most victories in Eurovision:

They came in last two times (1963 and 1977), and since the introduction of the Semi-finals in 2004 Sweden has managed to qualify for the Grand Final 19 out of 20 times (only failing to qualify in 2010)!
