Denmark: Fyr & Flamme win Melodi Grand Prix 2021

The Danish Melodi Grand Prix was held tonight with Fyr & Flamme as the winners and Denmark's representatives at Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam

Denmark held its national selection Melodi Grand Prix 2021 tonight from DR Studios in Copenhagen.

After almost two hours and eight songs, all the focus was on Fyr & Flamme and their song "Øve os på hinanden" that will compete for Denmark at Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, just like the bookmakers predicted.

Three songs from the 8 competing acts advanced to the super-final, determined solely by the public viewers via SMS/app: Fyr & Flamme, Jean Michel and Chief 1 & Thomas Buttenschøn. In the super-final it was again entirely the votes from the Danish public that selected Fyr & Flamme as the winners.

Fyr & Flamme

The two guys behind Fyr & Flamme are Jesper Groth and Laurits Emanuel. Jesper Groth is best known to the Danish public as an actor, especially from the Danish TV series "Sygeplejeskolen". He is educated from the Danish National School of Performing Arts. Laurits Emanuel is educated from the Danish Music Conservatory. Laurits is also a part of the band The Grenadines.

They both share a passion for nostalgia, kitsch and the music from the eighties – especially Melodi Grand Prix and Eurovision. They have released three singles, where the first one "Menneskeforbruger" quickly became a radio hit. Their style is pure eighties: Both the sound of the music, but also the presentation: Neon colors, synthesizer and pants pulled up well in the crotch.

First time since 1997

Their winning song "Øve os på hinanden" ("Practice on each other") is about getting better at something simply by practicing. It can be finding each other, about life in general or just getting better at dancing. They describe the song as a kind of film scene where time passes in slow motion and you take the first small steps towards each other.

Jesper and Laurits have announced that the song will be kept in Danish for Eurovision 2021. This will be the first time since 1997 that Denmark's song for Eurovision Song Contest will be performed in Danish.

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2021 was held on 6 March in one of the Danish broadcaster DR's studios in Copenhagen without audience. Hosts were Martin Brygmann and Tina Müller, and just like last year's Melodi Grand Prix, a live orchestra accompanied the singers.
